Clariant catalyst in use for large-scale green ammonia project in China

Smaller reactor reduces investment and operating costs

The deoxygenation catalyst of the "EnviCat Green" series removes traces of oxygen from green hydrogen

The specialty chemicals company Clariant is committed to sustainability. As part of a large-scale green ammonia project in China, a deoxygenation catalyst from the "EnviCat Green" series was selected. The catalyst is used to remove traces of oxygen from the green hydrogen produced in the plant before it is converted into green ammonia. The carbon-free production of ammonia leads to a significant reduction in the environmental impact of this basic chemical. It is predicted that green ammonia will play a key role in the global energy transition in addition to its use in fertilizer production.

It is also expected to play an important role in various application areas, including transportation, energy and hydrogen supply. "EnviCat Green" catalyst by Clariant is characterized by an excellent gas hourly space velocity (GHSV), a ratio of gas rate per catalyst unit that enables efficient deoxygenation processes. The process requires a much smaller reactor for oxygen removal, which not only saves equipment costs, but also offers high flexibility in transportation and installation. As a result, producers can benefit from significant savings in terms of investment and operating costs.

Hydrogen purification technologies for Net-Zero energy carriers

Xaver Karsunke, Vice President of Clariant Specialty Catalysts, commented, “The success of a global transition toward sustainable energy relies greatly on the collaboration of leading industry specialists. With our extensive experience in hydrogen purification technologies, and our innovative EnviCat Green series, we are proud to contribute to this project and others that support net-zero solutions like green ammonia.”

Clariant catalyst for the production of high-purity hydrogen

As global momentum for decarbonization accelerates, the demand for emission-reducing technologies has accelerated across all sectors. Clariant's "EnviCat Green" series of high-performance deoxygenation catalysts makes a key contribution by reducing impurity levels, enabling the production of high-purity hydrogen, which is essential for the next generation of energy. Furthermore, the catalyst allows efficient oxygen removal down to a concentration of five ppmv or even 0.1 ppmv if required. Due to its excellent activity and mechanical strength, the catalyst enables effective oxygen removal over a long lifetime. The "EnviCat" series has been in commercial use for more than 20 years. The catalysts have already been used in over 1,000 installations in various cleaning applications.
