With Christmas season upon us, consumers all around the world are looking for special gifts for their loved ones. High quality chocolate like Whittaker’s can easily warms one’s heart, but the new paper bag from Coveris Neuwied hides more that the eye can see. Designed using fully recyclable mono-paper, it simplifies the recycling process while still offering the premium look and ease of use. Whittaker’s, a famous New Zealand chocolate brand, was looking for an innovative, more sustainable packaging solution for pre-packed chocolate bars, that would still offer great point-of-sale presence and end-user convenience. Thanks to Coveris Neuwied’s long experience in paper manufacturing (since 1912), the chocolate brand saw the first test packs only a few weeks after the order was submitted, despite the long geographical distance.

“Since the product is already pre-packed, there was no need for adding additional barrier layers to protect the chocolate bars from sunlight or oxygen, which simplified and accelerated the production process”, explained Thomas Kluck - Sales Manager Food Long Shelf Life. After several trials the final premade paper bags are made from double coated 120 gsm Kraft paper and are printed in 7 colours using rotogravure technology. In addition, the final packaging stands out on the festive shopping aisles thanks to special heat seal and gloss varnish, as well as gold foil embossing. Besides maintaining the premium look of the brand, another benefit is the fact that the new bags are available in various sizes, that allows easier future changes or seasonal offerings. “We are happy to share our chocolate treats in these special gift-wrapped bags in time for Christmas, hoping they will please both our customers and the environment”, summarised a representative of Whittaker’s.
