Finnish food producer Snellmanin Kokkikartano Oy is fundamentally modernizing its intralogistics. The company is relying on a highly automated storage system from SSI Schaefer in response to the significant increase in demand for its ready meals. An assessment of the existing warehouse structure was launched in 2021, resulting in the decision to implement a high-performance automated solution for the Kerava site. The collaboration with SSI Schaefer laid the foundation for securing the growing demands for speed, efficiency, and quality in the long term.
Highly automated storage system with shuttles significantly increases capacity
The newly built logistics center, covering an area of 3,000 square meters, is based on the two-aisle “SSI Flexi Shuttle” system, which was specially developed for dynamic small parts warehouses. It combines shuttles, lifts, and racking systems into a modular solution that makes optimal use of the available space. A total of 40,000 container spaces are now available, increasing storage capacity by more than fifty percent. For Lauri Impiö, Head of Sales at SSI Schaefer Finland, the project demonstrates how a highly automated storage system can increase logistics performance. At the heart of the new setup: a two-aisle SSI Flexi Shuttle system. Designed for dynamic small parts storage, this modular, scalable solution integrates shuttles, lifts, and racking to make the best use of available space. With 40,000 bin storage locations, the new system increases Kokkikartano’s warehouse capacity by over 50 percent, creating the flexibility needed to support long-term business growth.
End-to-end networking of production, warehouse, and shipping
The solution connects production directly to all downstream processes. From the production line, products are transported fully automatically to storage, picking, or shipping. All 180 items can now be picked from a single system, which significantly improves availability. According to Tommy Snellman, CEO of Kokkikartano, the company benefits particularly from the fact that many products are delivered immediately after manufacture. The direct connection to the picking zone supports smooth processes from goods receipt to delivery. “Many of our products are shipped directly to customers without being stored for long. A highly efficient process from production to delivery is crucial and the direct link to the picking zone makes a big difference.”
Signal lamps reduce errors
The semi-automatic “Pick by Light” system increases process reliability in picking. Each compartment has a display with a signal lamp that reliably guides employees to the correct picking position. Confirmation via a button ensures clear feedback. All picking takes place in a refrigerated environment with temperatures between four and six degrees Celsius to ensure food quality. The items are then transported to the palletizing area and prepared for shipment.
Highly automated storage system: scalability and maintenance as key advantages
In addition to increased efficiency, Tommy Snellman emphasizes the ergonomic improvements in particular. The new concept eliminates the need for manual lifting of full containers, as the material flow is continued automatically. The system has been running stably and reliably for more than eighteen months. A maintenance team from SSI Schäfer on site ensures high availability at all times. As Kokkikartano plans to double production within the next ten years, the scalable, highly automated storage system offers the flexibility needed for further growth. The close partnership with SSI Schäfer also provides a reliable framework for future expansions and technological developments.
