The digitalization of the pharmaceutical industry continues to gain importance in industrial drug manufacturing. The Spanish pharmaceutical manufacturer Rovi, together with Rockwell Automation and the integration partner Adasoft, has implemented a comprehensive digital batch execution system. The objective is to standardize production processes, increase data integrity, and fully replace paper-based workflows. At the core of the implementation is the integration of the manufacturing execution system “FactoryTalk PharmaSuite 11” into existing enterprise structures such as ERP and LIMS systems. The first project phase was completed in less than one year.

MES integration enables pharmaceutical digitalization

The initiative focused on the full digitalization of batch manufacturing. By deploying the MES “FactoryTalk PharmaSuite 11”, paper-based documentation was eliminated and processes were digitally mapped. This resulted in improved traceability, reduced review times, and increased transparency across the entire production process. At the same time, the solution establishes the foundation for standardized and scalable implementation at additional Rovi production sites. The chosen approach is designed to be transferable to further facilities, thereby advancing pharmaceutical digitalization across the company.

Rovi relies on end-to-end digital processes

Rovi operates an extensive industrial footprint and combines the production of its own products with contract manufacturing through its subsidiary ROIS. Against this background, process standardization plays a central role. Rodrigo Riera, Regional Vice President South Region at Rockwell Automation, stated that Rovi’s vision for digital transformation aligns closely with the company’s mission to help customers become more competitive, resilient, and sustainable. He further explained that, through the integration of advanced MES technology and close collaboration, Rovi had been supported in achieving rapid and tangible results that set a new benchmark for the industry. Rockwell Automation supported the project throughout its entire lifecycle, including system design, software licensing, recipe creation, project management, employee training, and system validation.

Integration expertise as a success factor

Adasoft, acting as system integrator, played a key role in the implementation. The company was responsible for the technical integration of the systems and for ensuring smooth project execution. Oscar Cortada, Vice President Market Positioning and Partnerships at Adasoft, indicated that the company’s experience in regulated industries and its focus on operational excellence had enabled it to support Rovi in transitioning smoothly to a fully digital environment. He also emphasized that digital transformation is not solely a matter of technology, but involves enabling customers to make informed decisions and comply with the highest quality and safety standards. Close collaboration among all parties resulted in a consistent digital infrastructure that meets regulatory requirements and allows for future expansion.

Pharmaceutical digitalization as a basis for further scaling

Based on the initial implementation, Rovi, Rockwell Automation, and Adasoft plan to further expand their collaboration. The objective is to extend the digitalization and automation of production processes to additional sites. The introduction of an integrated MES system therefore represents a significant step toward ensuring long-term efficiency, quality, and competitiveness. At the same time, the project demonstrates how pharmaceutical digitalization can be successfully implemented in regulated production environments.
