From May 4 to 7, 2026, IFAT 2026 in Munich will focus on environmental technologies as a strategic lever for climate protection, resource efficiency, and stable infrastructure. Among those expected to attend the opening of the world’s leading trade fair are German Federal Environment Minister Carsten Schneider, EU Commissioner Jessika Roswall, and Bavarian Environment Minister Thorsten Glauber. Together with Messe München, they will officially kick off the event on May 4 at 10 a.m. on the Blue Stage. With this high-profile opening, Ifat 2026 underscores its role as a leading international platform where political objectives and technological solutions converge.
Stefan Rummel, Managing Director of Messe München, emphasizes, that reducing dependencies, increasing resilience, strengthening supply security, and ensuring climate and resource protection is becoming increasingly important, especially in geopolitically volatile times. He adds, that environmental technologies and IFAT as a global platform offer solutions precisely for this. It is therefore particularly important that the industry receives this attention and priority from policymakers both nationally and internationally.
IFAT 2026: Environmental technologies as a stable market of the future
A long-term analysis of exhibitor surveys from the past 13 years shows that the environmental technology sector remains a resilient market of the future even in times of economic uncertainty. Despite economic fluctuations and global crises, including the pandemic, companies’ fundamental expectations for the future have remained remarkably stable.
Although the current economic situation has been viewed with greater caution in recent years, the medium- and long-term outlook remains positive. From the industry’s perspective, investments in infrastructure, resource security, and the circular economy are not only continuing but are often being expanded.
A resilient industry despite global challenges
The analysis highlights the high adaptability of companies in the environmental technology sector. External shocks did not lead to a structural collapse in future expectations. Rather, the industry is demonstrating a commitment to long-term transformation processes and is increasingly aligning its business models with sustainability and resource efficiency. This results in a clear thematic focus for Ifat 2026: The shift from linear production and consumption models toward closed material cycles is at the center.
Exhibition Director Philipp Eisenmann explains, that companies clearly recognize that circularity, resource conservation, and efficient infrastructure are not merely ecological necessities, but rather economic and security policy imperatives. This is also reflected in the extraordinary resilience and stability of future expectations over more than a decade.
IFAT 2026 puts the circular economy at the center
Under the theme “Circularity is a must,” IFAT 2026 sends a clear signal regarding the strategic importance of circular value creation. The goal is to keep raw materials in the economic cycle longer, reduce dependence on primary resources, and simultaneously tap into new economic opportunities. Circular business models are seen not only as a contribution to environmental protection but increasingly as a competitive factor for industry and infrastructure. IFAT 2026 will showcase practical solutions that enable companies to combine environmental responsibility with economic stability, ranging from new recycling technologies to smart infrastructure systems. In doing so, IFAT 2026 once again positions itself as an international meeting place for decision-makers from politics, business, and technology who want to actively shape sustainable and resilient future markets.
