SIG wins 2019 Thailand Energy Award for Rayong rooftop solar array

SIG has won the 2019 Thailand Energy Award Global-Warming Reduction Label for its rooftop solar array in Rayong, Thailand. The award from the Energy Ministry’s Department of Alternative Energy Development and Efficiency recognises SIG’s significant investment in off-grid alternative power at Rayong as part of the company’s commitment to put more into society and the environment than it takes out.

SIG’s 3.3-MWp (megawatt peak) rooftop solar array at Rayong is the largest of its kind in the region. Made up of more than 9,000 individual panels, the massive solar array covers an area of 18,000m2 – the equivalent of 2.5 soccer pitches. Capable of producing up to 4,431 MWh of renewable power annually, the installation at Rayong supports Thailand’s goal to cover 40% of its electricity requirements from renewable energy sources by 2036. Worldwide, SIG sources 100% of energy for production from renewable sources. In Thailand, where opportunities to purchase green electricity from the grid are limited, the company sources renewable energy indirectly by investing in GoldPower® certified renewable energy projects.

The investment in on-site renewable energy generation at Rayong enables SIG to source more renewable energy directly. It supports SIG’s efforts to tackle climate change by directly avoiding around 2,240 tonnes of CO2 equivalent emissions per year. SIG is committed to make a positive contribution to society as well as the environment. As part of the contract to install solar panels at the production site in Rayong, SIG’s supplier also installed a 7kWp solar array on the roof of a local school. The free renewable energy generated is enough to power the Nikhom Sang Ton Eng Changwat Rayong 10 school and will save the school more than 4,000 baht (120€) per month in electricity costs. Installing solar power is also helping to raise awareness of energy efficiency and climate change among the schoolchildren, teachers.
