The two leading networks promoting Single Pair Ethernet (SPE) in industrial communications, the SPE Industrial Partner Network and the Single Pair Ethernet System Alliance, have announced a close cooperation. The aim is to further advance the adoption of SPE technology by combining resources and expertise.

Simon Seereiner, Director of the Board of the Single Pair Ethernet System Alliance, stated at a joint press conference: "In a world full of changes, synergies are really the key to success. The industry in particular is facing revolutionary changes as we see right now. We believe that that these changes require new communication infrastructure, where SPE can really help to overcome the hurdles that we see today." He emphasizes that both small and medium-sized companies and large corporations are facing four major challenges in their daily business models: lack of digitalization, decarbonization, demographics, and deglobalization.

Joint strategy for the SPE market

Since their inception, both organizations have worked independently, with their own members, working groups, and thematic priorities. In view of the increasing market relevance of SPE, the networks have grown closer together since the 2025 Hannover Messe. In the future, activities will be jointly organized and strategically coordinated.

Appearances at trade fairs and events

The first joint appearances are already planned for this year. Both networks will be represented at SPS Atlanta - Smart Production Solutions USA from September 16 to 18, 2025, with a joint booth. They will also be jointly organizing the lecture program at the SPE Forum on October 22 and 23 in Ludwigsburg. The event will conclude with a booth at SPS - Smart Production Solutions from November 25 to 27, 2025, in Nuremberg.

Standardization work for Single Pair Ethernet technology

A key focus of the cooperation is participation in international standardization processes. Both networks support the SPE connector standard IEC 63171-7 and are committed to its further development. The standard defines uniform SPE connector faces and is intended to create a consistent communication basis for industrial applications. Existing connectors and standards remain unaffected.

Seereiner adds that new standardized digital communication infrastructures are the most important pieces of the puzzle for solving the challenges. It is about overcoming communication gaps in our own production facilities. The cross-domain key technology SPE ensures a future-proof IoT.

International perspective for Single Pair Ethernet

The focus is also on the further internationalization of Single Pair Ethernet. Users worldwide will benefit from a uniform, powerful, and future-oriented network technology. The member companies of both networks, which include Harting, Metz Connect, Phoenix Contact, Rosenberger, TE Connectivity, and Weidmüller, are contributing their technical expertise and innovative strength to establish a sustainable SPE ecosystem and provide practical solutions for industry.

Application of Single Pair Ethernet in various industries

SPE is an Ethernet-based connection technology that transmits data via just one pair of wires while also providing the power supply. In addition to its use in factory automation, SPE is also used in building technology and the process industry. Thanks to its simple infrastructure, low space requirements, and high energy efficiency, SPE offers a future-proof solution for a wide range of industrial and building technology applications.
