
Vetter, a pharmaceutical service provider, is expanding its pharmaceutical warehouse in Ravensburg. The capacity expansion supports the increasing market demand as well as the organic growth of the independent family-owned company. With an investment volume of over €150 million, the pallet spaces for cold storage will be expanded by further 16,000. Once completed, Vetter will have a total of 68,000 pallet spaces for different temperature requirements.
State-of-the-art and fully automated cold storage
Earthworks began at the end of last year. The warehouse expansion is scheduled for completion by 2028. The first milestone, the completion of the building envelope, is planned for the fourth quarter of 2026. In addition to the expansion of the high-bay warehouse, the new building will house a 240,000-square-foot (22,500-square-meter) storage facility for stability and reference samples, additional capacity for manual and automated optical inspection, a new employee restaurant, office space and a data center.

“Since the opening of our Center for Visual Inspection and Logistics in 2012, we have been on a continuous journey to enhance our storage capabilities for both room temperature and cold storage,” says Carsten Press, Vetter Managing Director. “The latest phase of construction marks a strategic step in our warehouse development, driven by the increasing need for cool chain due to the many temperature-sensitive medications.”

The primary purpose of the building extension is to expand the cold storage capacity. Cold storage cabinets and walk-in freezers that are specially designed for high-value pharmaceutical products and their accompanying materials. “The growing need for cool storage for innovative drug products increases the demand for additional storage space,” explains Timo Usinger, Senior Vice President Supply Chain Management, Vetter. “As a result, the new facility will be fully cooled. We are using the latest automation and digitalization technology, such as advanced monitoring systems and fully automated pallet storage and retrieval.”
