The integration of Physical AI into industrial applications opens up new possibilities for human-machine interaction. At Hannover Messe 2026, Beckhoff will demonstrate how large language models can be directly connected to control technology to influence motion sequences in real time and make automation processes more flexible. The focus is on how natural language can be used as an interface for machine control.
Physical AI combines AI and control technology
Physical AI pursues an approach in which AI models are directly coupled with deterministic control systems. As a result, machines no longer respond exclusively to fixed commands but can act in a context-aware manner. Beckhoff demonstrates how this connection can be implemented via standardized interfaces. Large language models access control functions directly and influence real-world movements.
Voice-controlled motion sequences
A first application scenario features a compact demo cell with the “XPlanar” planar motor drive system, the “TwinCAT CoAgent” AI tool, and an audio interface. Movements can be triggered by voice, which significantly simplifies interaction with machines. The floating transport units respond to spoken commands and execute corresponding motion sequences. This makes complex processes accessible without traditional programming.
Scaling Physical AI to Industrial Applications
At the Hannover Messe, Beckhoff is translating the concept into a more comprehensive application. The “ATRO” industrial robot is controlled via voice using “TwinCAT CoAgent for Operations.” The underlying Model Context Protocol enables the translation of speech into concrete machine commands. At the same time, the system handles tasks such as path planning and diagnostics. A demonstration scenario illustrates this using an interactive application in which the system plays chess against trade fair visitors.
Physical AI throughout the entire machine lifecycle
Software solutions already available, such as “TwinCAT CoAgent” and “TwinCAT Machine Learning Creator,” form the foundation for the use of Physical AI. They support both engineering and ongoing operations. From automated code generation to error analysis, end-to-end workflows are created that simplify the use of AI in automation.
“We are moving AI away from chat windows and directly into machines and enabling language models to access the real world of controls through new standards such as MCP,” says Hans Beckhoff, managing owner of Beckhoff, summarizing the current development. “Technical inventions have always influenced the way that society as a whole evolves. Artificial intelligence and physical AI have significant implications, on the same level as the steam engine and electricity.”
With Physical AI, Beckhoff presents an approach that expands classic automation with new interaction possibilities. The direct coupling of AI and control technology enables more flexible processes and reduces the effort required for programming and operation.
