Mondi has introduced a digital printing and label-free packaging solution that enables Komsa, a leading German distributor of digital infrastructure, to ship up to 35,000 packages per day without adhesive labels. The barcodes printed on corrugated cardboard reduce material consumption and optimize logistics processes.
Integrated barcodes on corrugated packaging
Using Mondi’s advanced digital printing technology, consecutive barcodes are printed directly onto the corrugated board, eliminating the need for separate labelling. This ensures visibility on all four sides and increases scanning reliability. Komsa operates 60 scanners on its packaging line, significantly enhancing processing speed and efficiency.
Sustainable logistics through label-free packaging
By removing adhesive labels, Komsa cuts costs, reduces packaging waste and minimises the risk of allocation errors. The solution supports faster throughput and contributes to more sustainable logistics processes. Harald Josef Ollinger, Vice President Marketing & Communications at Komsa, highlights: "The collaboration with Mondi is a real benefit for us - technologically, economically and strategically."
Flexible production for customised packaging
Mondi's digital printing technology supports label-free packaging with fully customisable barcodes, high-resolution images and variable data. The system uses water-based, food-compliant inks, offering high flexibility for seasonal, regional or campaign-specific packaging designs.
Strategic investment in label-free packaging
The solution builds on Mondi’s strategic investment in digital printing and the recent acquisition of Schumacher Packaging’s Western European operations. The result is a scalable approach for high-volume, label-free packaging that aligns with the industry’s demand for efficiency and sustainability.
Label-free packaging proves essential for high-throughput operations and reinforces the role of intelligent packaging design in modern logistics chains.
