With a new facility in North Rhine-Westphalia, Gea is further expanding its activities in the field of pharmaceutical freeze-drying. In Elsdorf, the company will bring together research and development, production, and service under one roof. The investment of over €80 million underscores the strategic importance of this market for Gea and simultaneously strengthens industrial value creation in the Rhineland region.

Together with NRW Minister of Economic Affairs Mona Neubaur, Stefan Klebert, CEO of Gea, opened the new technology center. Approximately 260 employees work there. The new facility replaces the previous plant in neighboring Hürth, whose capacities had recently been fully utilized.

Pharmaceutical freeze-drying: Expansion of production capacities

With the new center, Gea is expanding both its development resources and its production capacities for pharmaceutical freeze-drying systems. The physical consolidation of engineering, manufacturing, assembly, and service is intended to streamline coordination processes and reduce lead times.

Stefan Klebert emphasized during the opening: “With our new technology center in Elsdorf, we are investing in one of our growth areas and further strengthening our innovative capabilities in the pharmaceutical sector. We are also significantly increasing our production capacities. Both measures help us expand our leading position in this highly innovative market segment.”

Sustainable infrastructure for pharmaceutical freeze-drying

The new facility is designed for CO2-neutral operation. Photovoltaic systems on the rooftops supply the plant with electricity. This is used, among other things, for air-to-water heat pumps that support pharmaceutical freeze-drying processes as well as heating and cooling functions. According to the company, this allows for savings of up to 7,000 tons of CO2 in production. Additionally, 30 charging points for electric vehicles and six stations for e-bikes are available. On the approximately 45,000-square-meter site, sealed surfaces were largely avoided by using grass pavers.

Growing importance of freeze-drying

Freeze-drying is a key process step for numerous temperature-sensitive pharmaceuticals. Vaccines, antibiotics, serums, diagnostics, and biotechnology products require stable manufacturing conditions and high quality standards. Pharmaceutical freeze-drying systems must therefore meet both regulatory requirements and energy efficiency standards.

Gea addresses these requirements with technological advancements designed to reduce the energy consumption of traditionally energy-intensive processes. The new center in Elsdorf is part of a long-term strategy to systematically expand capacities in this segment and further solidify its position as a technology partner to the international pharmaceutical industry.
