Renewable energy is increasingly taking center stage in the global energy supply. “The smarter E Europe 2026” in Munich showcased which technologies are driving this transformation and how a climate-friendly energy system can be operated reliably. Europe’s largest trade fair alliance for the energy industry brought together 2,650 exhibitors from 52 countries and approximately 105,000 trade visitors from 163 nations over three days. The focus was on market-ready solutions for an energy supply based on renewable energy, digitalization, storage, and smart grid connectivity. During the trade show, the spotlight was on innovations as well as concrete applications for industry, energy utilities, and municipalities. According to the organizers, more than two-thirds of the exhibitors came from abroad. The high level of international participation underscores the growing importance of renewable energy for the global energy supply.

Renewable energy drives the transformation

The trade show made it clear that the technological prerequisites for a renewable energy system are largely in place today. Companies presented solutions for photovoltaics, battery storage, virtual power plants, smart grid and load management, charging infrastructure, and digital platforms for managing energy flows.

Markus Elsässer, founder and managing director of Solar Promotion, explains: “Fossil fuels are a thing of the past. The future clearly belongs to renewables. Over the three days of the exhibition, we demonstrated through practical examples and scientific evidence that renewables provide reliability, resilience and efficiency while making economic sense. That is why the path toward a renewable future must be pursued consistently. There can be no turning back.”

Flexibility is becoming a key success factor

A special focus was placed on the special exhibition “Renewables 24/7 - Secure Energy for a Changing World.” There, it was demonstrated how an energy system based on renewable energy can be operated stably and economically through smart grid integration. The focus was on flexible consumers, battery storage, digital control systems, and electric vehicles, which can also be used as mobile energy storage in the future. The interaction of these technologies is intended to help store or use electricity when sufficient renewable energy is available.

Bastian Gierull, Managing Director of Octopus Energy Germany, emphasizes that the energy transition requires, above all, smart flexibility. Only by storing, controlling, and using electricity in line with demand can an energy system be realized that is both affordable and beneficial to the grid. Bidirectional charging electric vehicles will also play an important role in this regard in the future.

The special exhibition “Renewables 24/7 – Secure Energy for a Changing World” clearly demonstrated that the energy system of the future will be completely different: more electric, more decentralized, more digital, and more flexible

Renewable energy strengthens the economy and ensures energy security

In addition to climate protection, economic and geopolitical aspects have come more into focus. According to the organizers, approximately 60 percent of Germany’s electricity is already generated from renewable energy sources. At the same time, annual expenditures on fossil fuel imports amount to approximately 80 billion euros. Against this backdrop, security of supply, resilience, and economic independence are becoming increasingly important. Renewable energy is therefore no longer viewed solely as a tool for climate protection, but also as a key factor for competitiveness and energy sovereignty.

Energy transition: New economic prospects through renewable energy

The economic opportunities presented by the energy transition also played a central role at the trade fair. Topics discussed included new business models, digital services, and the increasing integration of the electricity, heating, and mobility sectors. A panel discussion addressed the question of which societal hurdles could slow down the further expansion of renewable energy. The participants’ conclusion was clear: technological solutions are available today. What is now crucial, they said, are reliable political framework conditions and long-term investment security.

The importance of the energy transition was also underscored by the participation of high-ranking representatives from politics and government agencies. The focus was on topics such as industrial value creation, security of supply, and job security.

Trade fair sends a clear signal to the industry

“The smarter E Europe 2026” demonstrated that renewable energies have long since made the transition from future technology to a cornerstone of modern energy systems. Photovoltaics, energy storage, smart grids, electromobility, and digital platforms are increasingly forming an integrated, holistic system.

With strong international participation, a large number of market-ready solutions, and a focus on flexibility and digitalization, the trade show sent a clear signal regarding the further expansion of renewable energy and its role as the foundation of a secure, economical, and sustainable energy supply.

The next edition of “The smarter E Europe” will take place from June 8 to 10, 2027.
